Carhaix Plouguer, France is home to quaint cottages, rolling hills, and five-star wineries, but Dysmorfectomy said, “Fuck that, let’s drop another brutal death metal album this summer,” or so I assume.
With the release of “Hypothermal Dissection”, the one-man death machine, Anthony Guern, shows quite a bit of growth in a short amount of time. Dysmorfectomy’s 2016 release “Rapist of Flesh” was a formidable début that featured all the essential ingredients slam / death metal fans have come to expect: Gorey cover art (by Lordigan Sena), gruesome song titles, barely legible font, and above all very solid music.
Released June 30th, via Reality Fade Records, “Hypothermal Dissection” features an overall upgrade in both technical precision and intensity, which is a tall order to fill considering the act’s previous output.
In a genre that can be tough to stand out in, Dysmorfectomy has a fair share of tricks added to their consistently pummeling style. Breakdowns and tempo changes come at timely moments rather than being haphazardly slapped into songs for good measure.
The guitar riffing is varied, but doesn’t noodle around aimlessly. There are plenty of thrash(y) moments to appropriately avoid monotony. It is my understanding that you can never use the word ‘brutal’ too much when complimenting a vocalist, so it’s safe to say just that: The vocals are brutal (dood).
Lastly, holding this beast all together is an endlessly impressive display of drumming. With mixing and mastering for ‘Hypothermal Dissection’ done by Tsun Tsun Productions, I can’t tell if it’s a slightly upgraded recording technique this time around, or just a general improvement of the craft all together, but the drum work is certainly something to behold. It’s so devastating, you’d almost think they’re American (haha… aw just kidding France, but not really).
At this point, we can all agree that the internet is pretty fucking awesome, but is also entirely responsible for diluting fringe subgenres of heavy metal. There is a lot of stuff out there can be written off as sounding “just like that other band I know.” Dysmorfectomy is in a different class.
The precision and power, combined with the consistent rate at which they release new music makes it well worth the listening investment. Take a listen via Bandcamp stream or the YouTube Official Video (courtesy of Slam Worldwide) below. Try not to hurt anyone.
