COLD COLOURS ‘2018 Sampler’ EP Review & Stream

Article By: Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker ‡ Edited By: Leanne Ridgeway

The Minnesota prog doom/death metal collective we know as COLD COLOURS has shared the new three-song ‘2018 Sampler‘ EP with us.

The sampler contains previously released online singles “The Pale Heart” (2016) and “A Life Forlorn” (2017), as well as a cover of the Bathory classic, “The Lake“. Now, when I say share, that’s exactly what I mean as the band – Brian J Huebner (vocals, guitar), Matt Hamilton (lead guitar), Mike Andrie (drums), Jaden Adair (vocals, bass) – are currently bestowing the EP upon us as a NYP (Name Your Price) item.

They are doing so in anticipation that their long-awaited fifth full-length album, ‘Northernmost’, will be arriving later this year. It is not clear whether these tracks will be part of that album or not, but here they are now for your enjoyment…. and for (next to) nothing.

COLD COLOURS specialize in masterfully created, melodic death metal flowing with progressive atmospherics and myriad aural textures. Musically, they are comparative to such bands as Amorphis, Tiamat, or Sentenced. If you enjoy bands like those, then you will absolutely get into the aural emanations from COLD COLOURS, without a doubt.

In the spirit of giving due props, I must mention that these songs (and those on the upcoming album) contain keyboards contributed by Jon Rayl, who recently amicably departed ways with the band. Word is they will be continuing as a four-piece for the foreseeable future.
