When the mention of TRUE Black Metal is made at any time, anywhere in the world, there is one band whose name must go hand in hand with that mention.
Oslo, Norway’s MAYHEM were absolutely one of the earliest founders of the Norwegian Black Metal scene, their origins dating back to the early Eighties. The band was a highly controversial one, primarily due to their notorious live performances, but over time their story would become the stuff of myths and legends.
With events so incredible that the best Hollywood script writers could not conjure them any better, MAYHEM would become an entity of infamy. Their image as militant Satanists with anti-Christian and misanthropic views would come to full fruition with their ties to a string of church arsons in Norway throughout the early 90s, but even that would pale to events in the story of MAYHEM.
The 1991 suicide of vocalist Per Yngve Ohlin (“Dead”), and the 1993 murder of guitarist Øystein Aarseth (“Euronymous”) by former member Varg Vikernes (“Count Grishnackh”), of Burzum, would cement their place in the annals of extreme metal history with tragedy. But, what about the music?
The highly influential Dead era of MAYHEM is now the subject of a comprehensive Limited Edition Box Set from Peaceville Records, “Cursed In Eternity“. The package will contain six picture disc LPs, a seven-inch single, 92-page book, posters, and a DVD featuring MAYHEM‘s never-before-seen Jessheim and Sarpsborg shows (legendary 1990 live dates in Norway and short German tour) plus Henhouse rehearsal sessions.
These six titles are all presented on a special, limited, picture disc format for this release, with the set also including a seven-inch single vinyl containing two studio tracks (“Freezing Moon” and “Carnage“), recorded initially for the CBR compilation “Projections Of A Stained Mind“, and here featuring sleeve artwork made at the time by former vocalist Maniac.
The 92-page book contain tales and recollections of the legendary MAYHEM shows, and also includes letters and previously unseen photographs sourced from personal archives. As a final bonus inclusion, “Cursed In Eternity” features posters from the original designs and Zeitz photos from the iconic live shows highlighted in this package.
The “Cursed In Eternity” Box Set will arrive from Peaceville Records on November 16th, you can find further details and pre-order options HERE.
