An Interview With Musician / Video Director GREG P. YATES [Director Behind EMBER’s ‘Moonchild’, Etc.]

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant.com)

I am always fascinated by the myriad aspects that are revealed from music itself. Some people are merely just music fans and hey, that is cool and nothing wrong with it in the least. But for me, that’s just beginning to scratch the surface because there really is a lot more that goes into some creative projects. For instance, the creation of album artwork, or perhaps the behind the scenes work that takes place in the recording studio itself. Oldschool Sunday: TRESPASS [New Album Info + Official Video Premiere]

TRESPASS (Circa 1981)

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant.com)

NWOBHM band Trespass did not originally start out that way, no, instead they began life as a cover band named Track IV. The Sudbury, Suffolk, England-based act consisted of brothers Mark (guitar, vocals) and Paul Sutcliffe (drums), along with their friends Dave Crawte (guitar) and Richard Penny (bass). Eventually the guys got the itch to begin writing their own material, which they did and changed their name to Trespass around 1978. (By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant.com)

Los Angeles’ Interstelar have been an underground staple within the City Of Angels’ music scene since at least 2005.  The band has been an ever-present entity on the town’s live circuit during that period.  Continue reading “INTERSTELAR ‘Resin’ Review – Contest To Win A Vinyl Format LP For RECORD STORE DAY 2017”

ENSLAVED ‘E’ Review & Official Videos [Guest Contributor Kira Schlechter]

(By Kira Schlechter, Guest Contributor/Writer, RiffRelevant.com)

In just six songs (and two bonus tracks) on its latest album, “E,” the Norwegian band Enslaved has seismically shifted what metal is, blowing open the doors instead to what it can be – thematically as well as musically. Finally.  I have been determined to interview reactivated Maryland Doom legends EARTHRIDE for months now.  There were plans laid and attempts made at this year’s Maryland Doom Fest III and Descendants Of Crom Festivals.  Neither panned out due to whatever reasons but yet, the hope remained and determination never waned.   Continue reading “The EARTHRIDE Interview; Asheville, N.C. Oldschool Sunday: OBSESSION [Early Releases Being Re-Issued In December]

OBSESSION (Then)

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant.com)

Underground United States-based power metal legends Obsession first got together in New Haven, Connecticut circa 1982. The band’s style of dynamically aggressive-yet-melodic power metal struck at the right time with fans of heavy metal music. The band instantly struck a chord with those fans when their song “Shadows of Steel” was included on Metal Blade Records compilation series, Metal Massacre 2. Oldschool Sunday: FLYBANGER

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant.com)

Starting out under the name Jar, a band formed in Vancouver circa 1995 or so with vocalist Garth Allen and drummer Rob Wade, the band achieved a dedicated loyal following. That following and their rise as a highly sought after support act in the vast Canadian expanses culminated in several record releases for Jar. A pair of releases were issued under the Jar name, they were 1997’s self-released “Harsh And Discord” and 1998’s Factor Records-released “Knott Skull“.  Continue reading “Oldschool Sunday: FLYBANGER”

MOTHER MARY (Saigon Kick, The Cult, Etc.) ‘Insecurities Exchange’ EP Review & Stream

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant.com)

Music is ruled by the law of Six Degrees Of Separation, or what some call the Kevin Bacon formula. It’s the belief that you can make certain things connect at some point somewhere, anywhere you look really, if you look closely enough. For a quick, random example, here: Say I want to draw a linear connection between Black Sabbath and KISS. Easy, Eric Singer…he’s drummed in both bands, and still does in KISS of course. Anyway, I hope you get the point. Continue reading “MOTHER MARY (Saigon Kick, The Cult, Etc.) ‘Insecurities Exchange’ EP Review & Stream”

Oldschool Sunday: WITCH CROSS

WITCH CROSS (Then)

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant)

In a day and age where there’s countless bands laying their claim to using the word “witch” in their moniker, let’s take a look back at one of the earlier, better witch-related bands. Of course I am talking about Denmark’s magnificent Witch Cross, one of heavy metal’s more underappreciated bands in my opinion. Continue reading “Oldschool Sunday: WITCH CROSS”

YEAR OF THE COBRA ‘Burn Your Dead’ EP Review; Video Premiere

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant.com)

Seattle duo of all-things musically outside of the norm, Year Of The Cobra, just issued their latest mark making studio effort today, Oct. 27th. Titled the “Burn Your Dead” EP, members Amy Tung Barrysmith (bass, vocals) and Jon Barrysmith (drums) are definitely on a fiery roll. That roll is rounded out by the pair’s ability to craft intensely diverse, multifaceted music that refuses to adhere to a singular styling. DREADNOUGHT ‘A Wake In Sacred Waves’ Review & Stream; Tour Dates

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant.com)

Denver, Colorado’s Dreadnought evidently must take their hometown’s motto of “The Mile High City” to heart in their music. The progressive nature of it is miles high, or beyond, what many other supposed progressive acts are doing these days. Yet, clearly there is a juxtaposition of directions transpiring here on their new offering, “A Wake In Sacred Waves“, which was released on Oct. 6th. RUFF MAJIK ‘A Finch In A Cherry Tree’ EP Review & Stream

My favorite Pretoria, South Africa-based band are back with a new EP! The psychotic garage rock and psyche blues band Ruff Majik return with the 3-song “A Finch In A Cherry Tree“. My working relationship with covering the lads, Johni Holiday (guitar / vocals), Jimmy Glass (bass) and Benni Manchino (drums), goes back at least 3 releases and nearly as many years too. SPECTRAL HAZE ‘Turning Electric’ Review & Stream

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant.com)

From far off Oslo, Norway comes Spectral Haze and their third studio offering, “Turning Electric“, from Totem Cat Records. The six-song slab of psyche-heavy rock and roll was dropped on October 20th like a hit of damp LSD. Much like that tab of illicit senses-expanding narcotic, this record is a musical freak out of pure lysergia. Continue reading “SPECTRAL HAZE ‘Turning Electric’ Review & Stream”

FIREBREATHER S/T EP Review & Stream

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant.com)

One of the heavier debuts to hit the scene recently is the 4-song S/T EP debut from Gothenburg, Sweden’s Firebreather. The effort dropped on October 13th from Suicide Records and finds guitarist / vocalist Mattias Nööjd, bassist Kyle Pitcher and drummer Fredrik Käll crafting some rather damaging heaviness.
