Oldschool Sunday: ZIMMER’S HOLE [Re-Issues & New Release Set For 2018]

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer,

Let me begin by saying that the fact that British Columbia-based speed metallers Zimmer’s Hole are now over 25 years old is simply mind-boggling to me. The band was really begun as a side project of several members from Strapping Young Lad, and to be honest, is a little in a similar vein of music. But hell, there is nothing wrong with that if you are asking me. Continue reading “Oldschool Sunday: ZIMMER’S HOLE [Re-Issues & New Release Set For 2018]”

(By Brendan Burns of Wasted Theory, Guest Columnist,

For as long as I can remember, it’s always been about the guitar player or the lead singer.  That lethal concoction of singers and axe-swingers like Page and Plant. Mick and Keith, Tyler and Perry, Daltry and Townsend, the list goes on and on…   Continue reading “FOUR ON THE FLOOR #4: JON BARRYSMITH of YEAR OF THE COBRA – Brendan Burns’ Drummer Spotlight; Live Photos From Psycho Las Vegas”

Oldschool Sunday: BLOODBATH [Upcoming Split With AUTOPSY + 2018 N. American Tour]

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer,

In today’s music journalism realm, the term “supergroup” is as commonly brandied about as any other type of label or tag. It has not always been so either as there was a time when a supergroup was a rarity, something special and outside of the norm. The qualifications to meet this supergroup designation were simple too, be a band comprised of well-known, established musicians…and that was pretty much it. Oldschool Sunday: THE BLAMED

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer,

Christian Hardcore / Punk Rock band The Blamed had its U.S. roots planted between two states, Illinois and California when the band basically fired up in 1994 at the hands of its founder, the Cali-based Bryan Gray. From there, the band would release a string of volatile, posi-core albums that showcased their ever-evolving sound before disbanding less than a decade later. Oldschool Sunday: TRESPASS [New Album Info + Official Video Premiere]

TRESPASS (Circa 1981)

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer,

NWOBHM band Trespass did not originally start out that way, no, instead they began life as a cover band named Track IV. The Sudbury, Suffolk, England-based act consisted of brothers Mark (guitar, vocals) and Paul Sutcliffe (drums), along with their friends Dave Crawte (guitar) and Richard Penny (bass). Eventually the guys got the itch to begin writing their own material, which they did and changed their name to Trespass around 1978. (By Kira Schlechter, Guest Contributor/Writer,

In just six songs (and two bonus tracks) on its latest album, “E,” the Norwegian band Enslaved has seismically shifted what metal is, blowing open the doors instead to what it can be – thematically as well as musically. Oldschool Sunday: OBSESSION [Early Releases Being Re-Issued In December]

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer,

Underground United States-based power metal legends Obsession first got together in New Haven, Connecticut circa 1982. The band’s style of dynamically aggressive-yet-melodic power metal struck at the right time with fans of heavy metal music. The band instantly struck a chord with those fans when their song “Shadows of Steel” was included on Metal Blade Records compilation series, Metal Massacre 2. Continue reading “Oldschool Sunday: OBSESSION [Early Releases Being Re-Issued In December]”

Oldschool Sunday: FLYBANGER

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer,

Starting out under the name Jar, a band formed in Vancouver circa 1995 or so with vocalist Garth Allen and drummer Rob Wade, the band achieved a dedicated loyal following. That following and their rise as a highly sought after support act in the vast Canadian expanses culminated in several record releases for Jar. A pair of releases were issued under the Jar name, they were 1997’s self-released “Harsh And Discord” and 1998’s Factor Records-released “Knott Skull“.  Continue reading “Oldschool Sunday: FLYBANGER”

Oldschool Sunday: WITCH CROSS

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer, RiffRelevant)

In a day and age where there’s countless bands laying their claim to using the word “witch” in their moniker, let’s take a look back at one of the earlier, better witch-related bands. Of course I am talking about Denmark’s magnificent Witch Cross, one of heavy metal’s more underappreciated bands in my opinion. Continue reading “Oldschool Sunday: WITCH CROSS”

Oldschool Sunday: CHÉ

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer,

Let me start by saying that Brant Bjork is one of my favorite musicians ever. The man, or in his case The Man, can do it all and pretty much is the living embodiment of all that is Stoner Rock. That said, Brant has been either the catalyst for, or participant in, many an amazing rock band and in today’s case, he is both for the short-lived Ché. Continue reading “Oldschool Sunday: CHÉ”

Oldschool Sunday: SALLY

The Birmingham, UK-based band Sally originally began as a trio in 1996 with members Andrew Parker (guitar), Peter Brown (bass) and Darren ‘Dirty’ Donovan (drums, vocals). The three adopted the name Sally in tribute to the heroine ‘Sally Hardesty’ from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and played music heavily influenced by the likes of Fu Manchu, Mudhoney and Sonic Youth. Riot’s Revelation: GROUND ‘I’ Stream & NYP Item; Video Premiere

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer,

There is nothing like finding fantastically kick-ass music that is FREE for you to obtain. That is almost always the secondary premise of Riot’s Revelation, the first being making you aware of said kick-ass music first and foremost. Then the fact that it requires no expense to procure it is just as equally paramount. Continue reading “Riot’s Revelation: GROUND ‘I’ Stream & NYP Item; Video Premiere”

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer,

There is always a chance that some of the bands I wish to share with you all via our Oldschool Sunday pieces aren’t just old, they’re damn near altogether obscure. That would be the case for today’s subjects, Stockholm, Sweden’s Mental Hippie Blood and truth is, that is a damned shame. Continue reading “Oldschool Sunday: MENTAL HIPPIE BLOOD”

Oldschool Sunday: BLOOD DUSTER [Includes Break Up Announcement]

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker”, Lead Journalist/Writer,

The birth of Australia’s Blood Duster occurred in 1991 with Jason Fuller (aka Jason PC on bass), Anthony Barry (vocals and guitar) and Andrew Brown (drums). The band’s name was taken from a John Zorn song, “Blood Duster“, off his 1989 album release, Naked City. That 3-piece version of the band was short-lived as Anthony Barry was almost immediately replaced by Troy Darlington and Callum Wilson. By their own admission, they formed with the sole purpose of being more intense than other bands that were around at that time. Oldschool Sunday: McOil

(By Pat ‘Riot’ Whitaker, Lead Journalist/Writer,

Talk about an obscure band, one that released one respectably solid album and then faded into the rock and roll haze Well, this is them..such a band. McOil were from Germany and played some intense Progressive Rock that contained concrete elements of Hard Rock and early Proto Metal. Continue reading “Oldschool Sunday: McOil”
