Premiere: MOS GENERATOR “Wicked Willow” Video; ‘Road Rats Tour’ w/ FU MANCHU

Article By: Leanne Ridgeway

A couple of weeks back, we shared news of Fu Manchu‘s new release and tour, with Mos Generator on board as direct support.

Today we bring you the full list of MosGen tour dates, plus a premiere of the new Official Video for the track “Wicked Willow“, off their ‘Abyssinia‘ album.

Port Orchard, Washington‘s trio of heavy rock chieftains – Tony Reed (guitar, multi Instrumentalist), Sean Booth (bass), and Jono Garrett (drums) – are gearing up for a ‘Road Rats Tour‘, tacking on a nice run of headlining shows in additional cities surrounding the route of the Fu Manchu tour. Mos Generator recently finished up recording the songs for their upcoming album ‘Shadowlands’, which is now in the process of completing the mix and mastering at his HeavyHead Recording studio, with the hopes for it to be done before the end of February.

The song “Wicked Willow” is one of my favorite tracks from ‘Abyssinia‘, and it pleases me immensely to be able to premiere Mos Generator‘s video for it here today. The video was directed and edited by Chris Mathews, Jr., of Joonior Studios in Seattle, WA, with additional technical direction by Grant Carey and Brian Mathews.

The video’s effects are quite interesting, a strangely alluring perspective as you watch it, and director Chris Mathews Jr. gave us some technical tidbits about the creation of the “Wicked Willow” video for our A/V filming curiosity:

“We used a pair of household X-Box Kinects to film the band performing the song, but we collected their performance in infrared. This allowed us to take that infrared data and turn it into a 3-dimensional point cloud. This 3D point cloud allowed us to manipulate the band in a virtual environment.

After editing the infrared data into a cohesive music video we gave the video a vintage VHS treatment to replicate the feeling of a classic video played back on dad’s old basement TV.”

If the name Chris Mathews Jr. sounds at all familiar, you may recall Mos Generator’s involvement with Joonior Studios in past projects. These have included his ‘Songs From The Firmament‘ film (see a trailer), and several of Mos Generator‘s past music videos – including “Cosmic Ark” (of ‘The Firmament‘), “Catspaw” (also from ‘Abyssinia‘), and “Electric Mountain Majesty“.

Tony Reed shared some words about Joonior Studios, as well as the upcoming Mos Generator tour:

“Chris Matthews Jr. and Joonior Studios have produced four music videos and a concert video for us. All of them look wonderful and use creative techniques to achieve amazing results on a very tight (if any at all) budget. As I am writing this, I am taking a break from vocal tracks for the new album and as soon as I complete and mix the song we choose for the video, I will send it to Chris and he will start work on the next video. He tells me he’s already got some interesting ideas.”

“In other news, look at these rad tour dates!!! Out on the road supporting Fu Manchu and pretty damn excited about it. When are out on our own we will also be sharing the stage with a fine list of Hooligans, including: Slow Season, Year of the Cobra, Destroyer of Light, Kook, Ol’ Time Moonshine, Salem’s Bend, Speedealer, Hex Rays, Sower, Fox 45, Teepee Creeper, Horehound, Wizzerd, Child, Rare Breed, and Black Pussy. Come out and see us sometime.”
